Iz loves her skirt. I made TWO, yes TWO last night in less than TWO hours. These are so much fun to make. And Iz just loves it. She picked out the fabric. I mentioned to her yesterday that I was going to make her the skirt and showed her the fabric (that she picked out at the store) and she declared that the fabric was too big for a skirt and she didn’t like it. She’s TWO! Anyway, I can’t get the thing off her now. What I love about this skirt? Well, it has a drawstring waist, so it will grow with her, and it is just long enough that we don’t get a peak of what’s underneath when she’s sitting (most of the time). I will be making many more of these! And if you are local – I’m teaching others how to make this on Monday, June 18, 1-4Pm, at The Children’s Art Museum. We had so much fun tonight. Mom(L) and 5 year old daughter (L2) came for a stitch session at LuckyStitches. I have to tell you how thrilled I was to learn that L2 has already been sewing on a sewing machine with her mom. How awesome is that! And not to mention that she celebrated her 5th birthday this past week, so she really started sewing when she was 4!!! We had a lot of fun. After reviewing how to thread the machine, L2 spent some time stitching over some straight lines that I had drawn on muslin. What amazing coordination! It was really wonderful. We quickly then turned to making little totes. Perfect for carrying 5 yr old gear around (and made form cool pink fabric from Reprodepot), she sews like a pro! And her mom made a tote for her little brother, out of the sweetest green print (also from Reprodepot). I think they had a great time. I had a lot of fun. I’m pretty sure they are going to keep sewing together. Oh, think of the things they’ll make!
Sewing with your kids is a really wonderful experience. There may be times when attention spans are really really really low, but they are paying attention and learning. Remember…it’s all about the practice!
There will be several chances to get your kids sewing in the next couple of months at LuckyStitches. So click on over to LuckyStitches and sign up for the announcement list! There will be Sewing 1-2-3, which will meet every Thursday afterschool from 3:30-5, where we will have small projects using the sewing machine. This is a great class for kids who already know how to use the machine, and for those that don’t parents can stay and sew too! There will also be Sew with Me! A sewing class for the beginners, where kids can bring an adult in their life and sew a project together. And don’t forget about the Sewing 1-2-3 class at The Children’s Art Museum in Shelburne Falls. This meets every Monday 4pm-5:30pm, where we do some really cool projects, by hand!
Sewing 123 star bi-fold wallet, originally uploaded by zannestar.
This week at studioCAM we are making wallets. I’ve put together 2 felt wallets, one is a Star Bi-fold (above) with a place for your bills, cards and coins.

The second is a darling Pirate’s Purse, a simple change purse.
It was tons of fun making these, it had been a while since I’ve used so many hand stitches and needed a refresher in the stitch department. I referred to See and Sew. It’s got great pictures and is quite perfect for helping kids sew.

enjoy!
I am so excited. There are no words, only butterflies, a few sleepless nights and I just can’t sit still! Jan 22, I will start a sewing workshop with kids! It will be at The Children’s Art Museum, which will hold it’s grand opening on Jan 21. I’ve planned a multitude of 2 hour sessions that will take place every Monday after school for kids 7 and up (under 7 with parent or caregiver). Once the kids sign up and pay the materials fee, they’ll get their very own sewing box filled with the basics! We’ll do some stitch projects, some pattern projects, some embellishment projects.
This is really exciting for me as I think of ways to “work”, but still have an open and flexible schedule and still be able to go to play dates and music class and all those important things. I have plans to expand this whole concept. I also lead a Sewing Series at the local Family Center once a month.
Anyway – once the Sewing 1-2-3 calendar is firm, I’ll post it, so if you have kids in the locale – they can sit and sew for a bit every Monday. I’m also looking for donations for this workshop:
- fabric
- trim
- notions
- thread
- embroidery floss
- sequins
- beads
- sewing supplies
- yarn
- ribbon
- knitting/crochet supplies
If you can send/drop off some goodies – I’d be forever thankful!
Stay tuned…more info to follow!
