We were eating lunch together (like we do almost every day) and Iz was rubbing my arm. She looks up at me and smiles. “Mom, you are my best friend”. You are mine too sweetheart. Please don’t ever forget it.

This is so cool. Rob got this amazing little package from a former student of his – and it’s art – the whole process. She made them, now he has to distribute them. Read all about it on Rob’s blog -.
I found this post this morning on the Craftzine blog: .
Oh, I am so eager to re-make my studio. When we lived in Brooklyn, this lovely wardrobe held our entertainment stuff, tv, dvd, stereo, etc. When we bought our 200+ year old house in New England, it wouldn’t fit in the room where we have our tv. We were barely able to get it up the stairs into my studio. It’s got a bunch of dings in it, some heavy duty scrapes. The dark stain was perfect for our Brooklyn apartment. It’s not so great now. (could it be the dark grey faux wood paneling? – perhaps) It will definitely get a coat of paint. Maybe cherry red? to go with the pink walls I’m thinking of? Maybe a celery color? or even a camel/gold/tan? It needs help inside too. I need some shelves where the tv went. It’s too big of a space for small folded fabric pieces. I’ve organized them by color, but they always tumble. And of course – a fresh coat of white paint.I really need some storage ideas. Perhaps a trip to Ikea, I’ve got pages tagged in their latest catalog. I think I need a visit from . She’s the organizer extraordinaire!
Ok – These are the before. Once you’ll take a long look, you’ll understand. It’s just way toooooo dark and dreary! The walls are covered in dark grey and black faux (and , boy do I mean FAUX) wood paneling. YUCK! I want light and bright. To me, it’s just more comfortable light and bright. Dark and dreary makes me want to cry and it seems so cold (not to mention that in the winter it is FREEEEEZING!)
So these are a couple of my machines (the rest are in boxes or at ) The one to the left is a . I bought it years ago for my Dad, when I was visiting him and needed to make him drapes. I ended up taking it home. It’s been a great machine since.
The one to the right is a Bernette 238 Serger. Yep. My baby! Long story….While I was in elementary and high school (from 1976-1989), I had saved money. From birthdays, allowance, odd jobs. You name it. I think once I graduated from highschool I had something like $1500 saved. This account had never been touched – I had another account that I used for my paychecks in HS – so this was all mine. I knew exactly what to do. One day, mom and dad took me to the Quakertown Sewing Center (no longer there, I think it is a billards hall…) , I checked out the prices on the sergers and this was the one I could afford. I think it was something like $800+ dollars. Great! That would leave me enough for some fabric too!
I took this baby to with me. I made clothes for me and my before we would go out clubbing for the night. I made so many clothes with this. Then came senior year. Our project was to design and sew a line of clothing. Everyone loved my serger. My instructor begged me to leave it overnight so others could use it. Big – MASSIVE mistake. Someone broke it. My heart broke! There was no way I could get this fixed. BUMMER! I carried it with me through all my moves. There was no way I was giving this up, after all I had gone through to purchase it.
Then, when Dad was visiting, he took it back to and had it taken care of. A while later, it came back to me. AND IT WORKS! I love it. I’ve sewn a few things on it and now that my studio is organized and functioning, I’m sure I’ll be putting my little Bernette 238 to work again.

LuckyStitchers gathered at Friday night…and we had a blast!
Robin worked on a child’s quilt with fabulous prints from . Tina FINALLY (jeez…I don’t know what she was waiting for) finished her tote bag that she started in the fall. Lex was busy sewing a baby carrier – with baby on her back once he woke up. was busy knitting a bracelet (ooh…can’t wait to see this one finished). Helene was knitting a wool hat (yes in April…it’s for a benefit auction), and then sewed in a fleece lining. Stephanie was adding a loop (to keep her hair in place) to . Marie wanted help with her draft of an A-Line skirt.
It was fun! So much fun…I can’t even remember what I worked on. Can’t wait to do it again! I’m planning on having LuckyStitches open almost every Friday for a Friday Night Sew-cial. 6pm-9pm in Northampton, MA. Check for details.

We celebrated a 2nd birthday earlier this month. I baked her a STAR brownie. (I actually let her lick the spoon! WHAT A TREAT! I’ve never seen eyes like that!). I had a few sparklers and used one for the center. She was pretty amazed.
For her party, we ordered balloons, when they came in the house, she stood in amazement. I was hoping that each child could take one home, but by the end of the party, they were tied in a knot and the kids were taking turns running through the house with them. Izzy’s hair is so fine, that the static LOVED her. too cute!
The cupcakes were on a tower and loaded with sparklers. It certainly held everyone’s attention!
The party ended as quickly as it had started. We had a great time. I found cupcake wrappers in her bed!
oh and I almost forgot…
The Birthday Shoes. Oh to be 2 again…..I wonder if they come in my size…
Happy Birthday Iz!
Cliché but true, I think. There is nothing that can replace being creative and productive together. Here you can read the .
I am eager for my (almost) 2 year old to learn to sew. I have wonderful memories, soul filling moments in time of creativity and accomplishment. I remember sewing with my mom, first it was counted cross stitch and probably a bit of embroidery and I can imagine sitting next to her while she sewed curtains for my room. I do remember picking out the fabric for them, once it was a tiny print of red, blue and yellow flowers.
I feel like sewing has always been a part of me. I have smatterings of memories of sewing and making clothes for myself. Mom or Dad would take me to the fabulous sewing center (which I think is now a bowling alley or a billards hall) and I would spend hours looking through the pattern books, picking out a pattern, then another chunk of time going through all the fabric bolts and remnants until the perfect fabric had been chosen. I felt like I had gotten to spend the entire day there (perhaps it was only an hour?). Then to get home and lay the pattern out on the fabric and cut it out. Pin it together and sew. And not go to bed until it was finished. I remember doing that quite a bit. I would stay up and make a second skirt and if my back could handle it, I would cut fabric for another and consider sewing it together. But I probably had to go to school the next morning and I would reluctantly shut the light and go to bed.
After getting accepted into Art School and spending 4 years studying Fashion Design (or as some would put it 4 years of sewing), I knew that I wanted to keep it for myself. It was something that I had been doing all my life for me, and I was not about to do it for anyone else. I did go into the fashion industry, but worked on the textile side and at times, dabbled in the art direction of the marketing of apparel.
I still sew these days (although not as often, I have a munchkin that would prefer my undivided attention), and my husband sews too. It’s worked it’s way into his art. Soon, Izzy will sew and we can work on projects together.

We spent a few days in Seattle last week and after being there for 24 hours, the power disappeared. There are blogs about the storm and reports and all that info stuff. We had no idea how bad it was when it was happening. We were driving on the insterstate a bit before the power went out and couldn’t see when huge trucks would go by – the puddles were so deep. We were really fortunate to make it home! It is just about a week after the storm hit, and the reports say that some of the population won’t have power through the holidays. bah humbug. We were fortunate to spend the few days with the best of friends and family. We really just wanted to hang and watch movies…maybe next time. We did get to spend a few hours with old friends and family after driving for a bit and finding a Thai restaurant that didn’t have a line down the street. Target was open, only with generators, and it was packed! Of course – where else would one want to be? Since we were traveling, I only bought diapers and wipes
, but if I had a huge suitcase with me…well..we know what would happen…
