Handmade Holidays at LuckyStitches…

350x500_handmadeholidays

LuckyStitches opens in Seattle in December!!!  I’m thrilled to offer Handmade Holidays, which includes fun ornament projects like Pom Pom Garland, Scrap Garland, Felt Ornaments and Bird Ornaments, as well as a Fabric Gift Bag workshop and a No Sew Scarf class.  And, of course, Sewing Machine Intro, because it’s time to meet your sewing machine (again or for the first time). So check out the Class Descriptions, sign up for the Announcement list, and please tell ALL of your friends, especially the ones that live in the Seattle area.  Hope to stitch it up with you soon!

Knitting Buttonholes

I’m working on a few presents, so sorry, no crafty pictures, but I needed to know how to knit a button hole.  I can sew one with my eyes closed, but since I’m a novice knitter, I need my eyes open and the internet.  I actually squealed when I found this and smiled the whole time while watching.

Working on…

A New Hat

Iz needed a new hat, so I found a bag of brown/red yarn at Value Village, threw in some eyelash yarn and knit her up this quick little hat.  I used the Clover pom pom maker.  Let me tell you, it is my favorite pom pom maker OF ALL TIME.  So quick, so easy, doesn’t fall apart, it’s a dream.  I’ve made pom poms, just to have them.

I don’t know about you, but I have become a fan of Clover, BIG TIME. You can shop on their US site if the Japanese site is tough (but so worth clicking around).

WIP

Birds. Yep, on the brain, like everyone else.  You’ve seen them all I’m sure.  I’m working on my own little pattern, a few variations.  Thinking about a possible class at LuckyStitches when it opens in Seattle.  These are so quick and take just minutes to cut out, sew and stuff.  Next step – off to Value Village to find the fabrics for my little flock.

I found these at Value Village too.

Thread

I’m going to be using them for the ornaments for the Ornament Swap.

I can’t believe Thanksgiving is next week.  Why is there so much Christmas stuff in the stores already!  I know why, I just wish those retailers wouldn’t do it.  It makes me so crazy, I’m not buying anything this Christmas, I’m making it all from found stuff.  So there.

I’m saving our egg crates, thinking that there’s a great to use them this holiday season. Art project ornaments for Iz? Hmmm, looking for ideas. Have any?

Color Wheels

People always ask, what’s your favorite color?  Pink is usually what blurts out, but honestly, I LOVE all the colors.  I could eat every single color like candy.  And I love color wheels.  I remember the color wheel on the wall of my art class in elementary school, then every single art class after that through college.  I still swoon when I see color arranged like this.

You can read about the history of color wheels here and here’s another post on the history of the color wheel.

Then there’s COLOURlovers, where you can work on your own color relationships and organization, and click here to read their fabulous article on the color wheel.

Mail Art

Getting letters and things in the mail is one of those things that makes my heart beat even faster.  I’m not excatly sure what it is about mail art, perhaps the passion that goes into making something for someone special, or the travel part, or the postage part (I LOVE stamps).  But I do love it.  I spied this today and had to share.

You can see all the rest on Riitta’s site, along with her other projects.  I especially love the snowflake project.

Don’t Worry, You Won’t Miss The Next One.

Today was the start of another of Lulu Smith’s Online Gallery days.  A lot has already sold, and if you are quick, you might be able to get this:

or these:

I’m sure there will be one in December.  You can sign up on her website to be notified of the next one and enter to win a free pair of earrings.  If you aren’t familiar with her work, well, what are you waiting for? And be sure to check out her blog.  That’s where you can find things like this, that I keep clicking on.

Yummy Delicious Costumes

I love movies.  Like books, I love getting lost in them.

I watched Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette the other night.  I could watch it over and over and over and over.  The movie as a whole was ok, kind of boring, except.  Except for the overall Art Direction.  BRILLIANT!!!!  Eye candy.  Totally.  And as a lover of fashion, the costumes were just breathtaking.  The colors, the fabrics, the sets, the jewelry, the shoes (did you catch the pink converse?), the hair, and even the food.  I just drank it all up.  In fact, I want the DVD so I can pause over each scene and drink it in even more. The lighting was just perfect for all the colors and textures and fabrics.  The hair was delicious.  Makes me love rich pastel-ly fruity color combinations.

I found this wonderful site: The Costumes of Marie Antoinette | The Movies and the Woman, that can tell you more about the pictures and history of the costumes, and which costumes can be seen in other films.  Prepare to spend a few hours, it’s a great resource.

Hmmmm, What To Do With Those Nasty Plastic Bags

Turn them into beautiful and delicate lace creations like Laura Ann Marsden.

or delicate wall adornments

or cushions.

I’m glad someone out there is making those nasty plastic bags pretty.  I’m glad they won’t be in the landfill and can still be useful.  I think the organic shapes are very pretty, I’ve always been inspired by lace, so delicate and carefully made.

Thanks to designers block for introducing me to Laura Marsden.

Sandra Backlund

I just knit a hat. I love my hat. (pictures later)

Sandra Backlund has knit some incredible fantastic amazing outfits.

I first saw her work in one of my issues of Selvedge:

I’m very excited about her current collection:

I especially love the way she transforms the body with her organic exaggerated shapes (not to mention those fabulous wedge shoes!).  The shapes are quite beautiful and only make the bodies more beautiful.  Her work is dreamy.  Be sure to check the archives on her site to see more work.

Thanks to Design Milk for reminding me of Sandra Backlund.
